Curious Traveler: Sea Festival of Trees opening gala was epic

Each year, the week before Thanksgiving, the Sea Festival of Trees Gala at the Blue Ocean Music Hall inaugurates the holiday season. This vibrant celebration, which my wife and I were privileged to experience at this year’s opening night gala, is more than a festive gathering; it’s a display of community spirit and shared traditions.

The Sea Festival of Trees is a unique event where organizations creatively decorate Christmas trees for a raffle. This year, over 100 trees transformed the gala into a competitive yet festive spectacle. Awards recognized various categories, from best beach theme by Absolute Glass to most creative tree topper by the Salisbury Lions Club. Tod, Mary, and William Dow shone with the best use of lighting, while The Institution of Savings excelled in best execution of tree theme. Support the Pink House earned recognition for a good cause, and Willey’s Scoop and Sweets enthralled everyone with their best in show Willy Wonka-themed tree.

Our evening started with a ride from our friend Mike Colburn and his daughter, Skylar, a devoted “Swifty” who provided the playlist of her favorite artist on our way across town. Arriving at Capri, we found ourselves amidst a buzz of excitement. Through some quick negotiations, we secured a table, diving into a lively and anticipatory atmosphere.

The walk to the Blue Ocean Music Hall was filled with anticipation. Meeting State Sen. Bruce Tarr on the way emphasized the event’s significance. The lobby’s eye-catching sand castle Christmas tree and sandy Santa Claus figure heralded the beginning of an enchanting evening. Reconnecting with friends like Jen and John Schillizzi, we felt a deep sense of community and shared excitement.

Upstairs, the gala spanned three rooms, each radiating charm. The creatively adorned Christmas trees, contributed by various local groups, displayed a wide array of creativity and generosity. The third room, a winter wonderland, featured an active ice rink that added to the festive spirit.

Kathy Aiello, the evening’s emcee, guided the festivities with vibrant enthusiasm. The suspenseful tree lighting led to a dazzling display, reminding us of the joy of community gatherings.

The gala buzzed with energy after the lighting. Santa Claus’s arrival allowed parents out for the night to get their own requests in from the big man. Delicious hors d’oeuvres circulated among the guests. The event felt like a semi-formal for adults, filled with Salisbury’s prominent figures, from officials to club members, in a building brimming with friends.

Each tree in the gallery represented a story from the diverse local entities involved. More than just a display, the gala supported the Salisbury Beach Partnership and the historic 1909 carousel, iconic symbols of Salisbury’s heritage, and rebirth.

The highlight was running into George and Judith Burtch, who flew in from Florida. George, serving as the carousel’s spokesperson, underscored the event’s wide appeal.

As the night concluded, the celebration spilled over to Uncle Eddies and an after party of Karaoke, and beach pizza. The gala, more than just a holiday event, reflected our community’s unity, traditions, and shared values.

I encourage you to visit this celebration of community and holiday spirit. The Sea Festival of Trees is open through Dec. 3 and the festival welcomes all who wish to partake in this unique holiday tradition. Experience the Sea Festival of Trees, and maybe even win one to take home with you.
